Amphitheater Fight in Pompeii

This painting is unique as a contemporary picture of a historical event. Tacitus, in his Annals, mentions a riot between the people of Nuceria and Pompeii, the result of a gladitorial show given by Livineius Regulus. The Pompeians won, and many Nucerians were badly wounded and several slain. This wall painting, uncovered in 1869 at Pompeii, measures 5 feet 7 inches high by 6 feet 1 inch wide. It shows the fighting going on in and about the amphitheater. In the foreground is a boulevard in which there are hawkers' stalls with awnings. The city wall is in the background. On the right is a square building, probably the barracks for gladiators.
