The work is well under way with a fine prospect ofbeing finished before next winter. It is probable that nosimilar work of its magnitude and physical difficulty has everbeen undertaken in the United States. In order to shortendistance it has been necessary to tunnel hills, blast down solidrocks and excavate millions of tons of earth on mountain stupendous enterprise has challenged attention allover the country. Its successful completion will be a triumphfor American brain and financial pluck. It will reclaim landthat now produces only sage brush and scant wild grasses, andwhich will be worth from $2,000,000 to $25,000,000. It isestimated that the reclaimed land will support a farming popu-lation of more than 100,000 souls and
