The project of establishing a home for aged women inFitchburg originated in a society of benevolent ladies, whohad organized in the autumn of 1879, under the name of theLadies Union Aid Society, chiefly for the purpose of aid-ing young girls, teaching them to sew and kindred employ-ments. The first annual meeting was held Dec. 6, January, 1884, the corporation received a generous giftfrom Dr. A. W. Sidney of a deed of land lying on Marshallstreet, to be used as the managers might think best for thebenefit of the home. Soon after this the society was called.
