College were very activej in the prosecution of the war against Germany, many of whomtendered their services to the State and the National Government invarious capacities, as noted below. William Hall Smith, President of the College, was called upon toorganize the Mississippi State Council of Defense, and served as activeVice-Chairman of the State Council. Dr. Buz M. Walker, Vice-President of the College, Director of theSchool of Engineering, and Professor of Mathematics, served as amember of the State Bureau of Four-Minute Men, and Director of theS. A. T. C. Unit at A. and M. John Curtis Herbert, Professor of History and Civics and Registrar,served as a member of the State Bureau of Four-Minute Men.
