COMBINED WHEEL AND TRACK BRAKE CAST-WELDING IN BALTIMORE A combined wheel and track brake has been in use for anumber of years on the Montague Street cable cars of theBrooklyn Rapid Transit Company. This line extends fromthe City Hall in Brooklyn to the Wall Street Ferry, and the9 per cent grade surmounted is so severe that a special type of. COMBINED WHEEL AND TRACK BRAKE brake which would afford absolutely safety under all condi-tions was extremely necessary. The patents covering thisbrake have recently been secured by the United States Metaland Manufacturing Company of New York. The mechanismof the brake has been improved in certain directions suggestedfrom its use in Brooklyn, and the brake has been adapted toelectric cars and will soon be placed on the market by thecompany mentioned. The accompanying illustrations show the improved brake asapplied to a maximum-traction truck. As willbe seen, the brake-shoe is regular shape, fittingthe periphery of the wheel and flange, and beingprovided at its base with a track-shoe for engage-ment with the rails. The shoe can be of castiron with chilled faces or any sort of detachableshoe can be employed with a malleable iron orother frame.
