A Red Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) silently surveys the open grassland of a Texas wildlife refuge in search of prey.
Their diet includes small animals such as young rabbits or rodents. The Red-tailed Hawk inhabits territories from North America to the central Alaska and northern Canada, and south as far as the Panamanian mountains. Although not always migratory, they will adjust seasonally to areas with the most abundant prey. In winter many of the northern hawks move further south.
