On June 21, 1906, the most destructive fire in the history of theinstitution occurred, during which the amusement hall, chapel,dynamo, engine and tool rooms were destroyed, and for a time thecenter portion of the main building was in danger. Fortunately,there was no loss of Hfe to either patients or employees. Plans were at once completed for the erection of a thoroughlyfireproof structure for engines, electrical apparatus, cold storage. In addition the Legislature granted an appropriation of $20,000for an isolation hospital, and the building was completed withinthe appropriation.
