DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecular structure, illustration. One strand is shown in tubular form, while the other is shown in space-filled form. DNA is the genetic material that controls the growth and development of all living organisms. It takes the form of strands of this double helix, with two spiralling sugar phosphate strands joined by pairs of nucleotide bases (horizontal struts). It is the order along the strands of these nucleotides bases, of which there are four types, that forms the genetic code.
