Hantavirus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This virus is also known as the sin nombre virus (SNV). Each virus particle (virion) consists of a ribonucleic acid (RNA) core, surrounded by a nucleocapsid and a lipid envelope. Several hantaviruses cause disease in humans. They can be fatal if they progress to either hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) or haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The virus is spread to humans via rodent droppings and urine.
