Laclede was delighted. He cut notches insome of the trees to mark the place, and told his young com-panion that when the river was free from ice he would sendhim here with workmen to start building a settlement. Bothreturned to Fort Chartres. Laclede is reported to have said:I have found a situation where I intend establishing a settle-ment which in the future, shall become one of the most beauti-ful cities of the world.
