Many of Bostons busi-ness men have their summer homes in this convenient place. Itsprincipal attractions are the fine ocean views, especially the onefrom Great Head—the high blufif at the southern extremity of thepeninsula—and the beach which is a part of the MetropolitanPark System. The United States government has powerful bat-teries on the heights and at Grovers Cliff. These batteries com-mand the entrance to the bay. 117. p THE HARBOR AND BEACHES. iig Revere Beach, The new American Brighton, is a gently-sloping sandy beach offering unexcelled opportunities for bathingand an inspiring view of the open sea. The beach is nearly threemiles long and terminates at the north in Point of Pines—a resortwith fine hotels. This magnificent stretch of shore is controlled bythe Metropolitan Park Commission. Along the crest of the beachis a driveway, with bordering promenades where thousands mayenjoy cool breezes and the ocean view, without the discomfortsof overcrowding. Shelters, bath-houses for surf-bathing, a bicyclestorage shed, and a police station occupy convenient rooms to the number of 1,700 are provided, and over7,000 men and women have used them in one day. There is littledoubt that this is one of the most popular of the sea shore re-sorts of Massachusetts. Revere Beach is most directly reachedby the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railr
