Bar mitzvah (Hebrew for 'son of commandment'). At the age of thirteen years and one day a Jewish boy is considered a responsible adult for most religious purposes. He celebrates his barmitzvah by being called up to the reading of the torah,usually on the next available shabbat (sabbath) after his Hebrew celebration of the barmitzvah is an important milestone in the life of the whole family and the parents host a party for family and most liberal and reform communities allow a Jewish girl to celebrate her Batmitzvah ( Hebrew for 'daughter of commandment') in a similar way.
