Executive officer of thefrigate Ohio, at the siege of Vera Cruz, Mexico, March,1847. Was flag officer of naval forces that co-operaledwith the army in the waters of North Carolina, 1862. Afleet under his command sileneed the Confederate bat-teries at SewelTs Point, May, 10, 1862, and moved up toNorfolk, which was found evacuated. CommissionedRear-Admiral. July 16,1862. After close of Civil War hewas in command of European Squadron. CommandantNavy Yard, Mare Island, 1868, and subeequentJrthat at Washington, D. C. Died Feb. 20, 1877.
