Browne, however, when reconnoitring ahead andscouting about with his escort and his Ghilzyefollowers, found a considerable party of those tribes-men there in a somewhat excited state, who pro-ceeded to tell him that the commander and garrisonof Khelat-i-Ghilzie—having heard of his approach,and believing him to be the Mullah, anxious tooccupy the fort with the force to which, for what-ever reason, he had attached himself—were alreadytaking steps to evacuate it the next night. Thatgarrison, they added, though more than a thousandstrong, would not oppose him, and were ready to yieldit to him personally. He had only to ride on, andtake possession. Browne, without more ado, started off at oncetowards the fort with only his personal escort of. A FORT CAPTURED 191 eighteen Sowars, and as he approached it he sawto his delight that a part of the garrison was al-ready in full retreat, whilst others were lining theramparts and gates in an undecided manner. So,within a short distance of it, he sent forward oneof his party with orders to the commandant tosurrender himself and the fort at once under thealternative of being blown to pieces by the armywhich was coming on behind. The commandantseemed to hesitate for a few moments, but at lastcame out, on which Browne placed two of his menwith lances behind him, giving orders to run himthrough on the first sign of treachery; and then,going straight into the fort with the rest of hismen, he turned out all the remainder of the garrison,and placing sentries on the gate and elsewhere, tookformal possession of the fortress.
