Aquatint of the people of Indonesia. Circa 1790. This intriguing image shows national dress, with a smaller hairy man standing off from the rest. This could be an orangutan or perhaps the legendary Orang Pendek of Sumatra. Some modern cryptozoologists have equated the orang pendek with reports that might indicate the late survival of (the recently discovered) fossil hominid Homo Floresiensis. Such a creature is mentioned in many folk accounts, and sightings have even been claimed by zoologists working to the present day. Many note its hairyness and strong powerful build, as well as its short stature and wild ways. The orang utan ape was quite well known by the time this print was made and would probably not have been drawn in this way.
