Itis difficult to speculate as to the source of this great amount of volcanic material, but the following-facts appear to bear on the question. The Tokatea Hill Series has been shown to contain interstratifiedrhyolites, and is largely intruded by numerous dykes of porphyrite and diorite. In this connection itis significant to note that intrusions occur much less frequently in the Manaia Hill Series than in theTokatea Hill and Moehau Series ; moreover, those that do occur are less crystalline than mosl of thosein the older rocks, and are probably o
