I have taken up this problem simply for the benefitof the beginner and the welfare of this valuable andfavorite breed. I will first take up the benefits de-rived from the double mating system, what it has ac-complished. It has combined grace, beauty and usefulness in ahigher degree than has been attained with any otherbreed. Take for instance the shape and color of thepresent day Single Comb Brown Leghorns; what have. A. J. Fell, West Point, Pa., one of thecountrys noted breeders of White Wyan-dottes, who made two wonderful wins atMadison Square two years in succession. we ? A bird unsurpassed in type, color and egg qual-ities. It is only necessary to look back a few years tocall to mind the shape and color of this breed. Whatwere they ? A bird that was blocky, short in legs, anda tail that was carried perpendicular, or rather whatwe to-day call squirrel tailed. A comb and wattlesthat should have graced the head of a Minorca. Infact the old type of Leghorns would be a disgrace incolor and shape to what we have to-day. But throughthe persistent and intelligent efforts on the part of theBrown Leghorn fanciers they have gained the presenthigh standard of perfection. These fanciers are to becongratulated on the improvement they have attained. However there is one detriment to this breed causedby the double mating system.
