About the first of November they readied apoint where the Mississii^pi sent out its strong current, fresh-ening the sea-water so that they could drink it; but theirclumsy boats, managed by unskilful men, could not cross themouth of the great river safely. The boat Avith Narvaezperished; that in which the missionaries were was foundafterwards on the shore, bottom upward. No trace of theFathers was ever discovered. Some of the boats were drivenon the land, and a number of Spaniards reached land safely,among them the priest Asturiano.
