Landing near themouth of the James River, he proceeded to attack York-town. It took a month to capture this place, and mean-while Johnston was getting ready to repel an attack uponRichmond. After taking Yorktown, McClellan pushed ontowards Richmond, and succeeded in getting within a fewmiles of it. Then the Chickahominy, a small stream, butswollen by sudden rains, divided his forces. Johnston atonce attacked the weaker division of McClellans army, and,though Johnston was wounded and forced to retire, he hadsucceeded in delaying McClellan. Meanwhile Jackson, whohad been sent to attack Banks, drove him down the valleytowards Washington, so frightening the authorities thatMcDowell was hastily recalled to defend the city.
