Sun burst over Western Brook Pond fjord, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland
Western Brook Pond fjord is locatedin the Long Range Mountains, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, a UNESCO World Heritage The fjord was carved eons ago by glaciers and at one point reached the sea. After the glaciers receded, the land rebounded from the weight of the glaciers and the fjord was cut off from the sea. The salt water was gradually washed out of the pond by the fresh water streams cascading down from the 600 m cliffs and the water is now fresh and very extremely pure (ultraoligotrophic). A trip down the fjord on a couple of land-locked boats is a popular tourist attraction.
