Palace with the votive shrine dedicated to St John the Baptist, patron saint of Genoa, in Piazza di Soziglia in the old town, Liguria, Italy

In the city of Genoa there are hundreds of votive aedicules that preserve statues of the patron saint, Saint John the Baptist. Some were the object of particular devotion, because the effigies of the saint were considered miraculous: the one in Piazza Soziglia is the protagonist of two miraculous events: in 1240 and 1251, on the occasion of two fires, the flames were quenched only when the bishop of Genoa brought, under the statue of the Baptist, the relics of the saint preserved in the cathedral.
