Of the previous history of the Burnsfamily little is known or recorded beyondthe statement that the estate had de-scended to David through several gener-ations of Scottish ancestors ; all, probably,farmer folk like himself. They were, nodoubt, a part of the same thrifty Scotch element that had contributed so much tothe colonial prosperity of Maryland andVirginia, and which had borne so large ashare in the fou
