Sunday December 11, Virginia Water, UK. The 100 foot high Totem Pole at Virginia Water – erected in 1958 to mark the centenary of the establishment of British Columbia as a Crown Colony – is showing its age and perhaps needs an overhaul: features of many faces are rotting away. Carved from a single Red Cedar tree by Kwakiutls Indians, a delegation of the original carvers returned in 1985 – when the pole was 27 years old – to refresh the paintwork. That was 31 years ago.
