The lower part of the spine is at upper right, ending in the sacrum and coccyx. At centre left the muscles from top to bottom are: the piriformis; the superior gemellus; the obturator internus; the inferior gemellus; and the quadratus femoris. These muscles, known as the lateral rotators, act to laterally rotate the thigh. They are shown in full at left, and in soft focus at right.
