Maker: Edward Winslow, American, 1669–1753, Trencher Salt, Silver, Height: 2 1/4 in. ( cm), In the late seventeenth century, salts became fixtures on the tables of well-to-do colonists. Salts took two forms: tall standing salts with knops surrounding the salt receptacle and the more diminutive trencher salt, of which this is an example. During this period, salt was still an expensive commodity, and including a salt receptacle on a banquet table signaled the owner’s prosperity.
