The author feels that in these two, as in the present species, the marsupiumis an important diagnostic character, and she cannot agree with Naumov &Stepaniants (1962) and Vervoort (19726) who include H. pallens in the synonymyof H. delicatulum. A marsupium has never been seen in the latter; moreover HYDROIDS FROM THE KERGUELEN AND CROZET SHELVES. Fig. 2. Halecium dufresneae sp. nov. from the holotype. A-C. Part of stemwith hydrophores and a giant nematotheca on bottom left. G. normal nematothecae. Scale in mm/10. 10 ANNALS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM the shape of the mature female gonotheca is different, being wider in broadview and eared in H. delicatulum. It follows that it is not possible to identify most of the species of Haleciumfrom sterile material alone. The present species diners from H. pallens in the shorter pedicel of theprimary hydrophore and in the marsupium, which is almost as large as, orlarger than, the gonotheca and contains only one or two eggs.
