General.—In a few localities, as on Quartz creek, alongthe lower portion of Sulphur creek, and on a few outlyingcreeks, private parties are working their properties withsmall outfits, and there, the old-time methods, formerly soextensively employed are still to be seen. Throughout thegreater part of the district, however, the placer depositsare owned and operated by large companies or corporationswho work their holdings on an extensive scale. The largercompanies are the Yukon Gold Company, Boyles Con-cession Limited, and a company controlled by Mr. A. Treadgold. These companies control the bulk of theplacer property in Klondike district, and in attempting togive a general description of the placer mining operationsin Klondike district, possibly the best and simplest mannerof so doing will be to describe briefly the installation andwork of each of these io6 In mining in this district many changes were neces-sarily introduced in adapting to the frozen gravels of Yukonthe placer mining methods previously understood andemployed in California and other temperate climates. Thedredges had to be strongly built in order to withstand thesevere service of digging the broken schists which composethe bedrock, and the frozen gravel which is almost asimpenetrable as granite. Probably the most serious prob-lem, however, was to overcome the frozen condition so thatthe material could be handled as readily as similar groundin California or elsewhere. These matters are of intenseinterest to the mining engineer. The Yukon Gold Company.—The Yukon GoldCompany owns practically all the more important gravelson Bonanza, Eldorado and Hunker creeks and their tribu-taries, the holdings of the company being mainly includedin an area about 25 miles (40 km.) in diameter.
