Light micrograph of a section of the endometrium, the mucosal lining of the uterus, taken at the late stage of proliferation (around ovulation on the 15th day of the menstrual cycle). The endometrium consists of a ciliated epithelium supported by a highly cellular connective tissue stroma containing many tubular glands (extending towards the surface). Under hormonal influence the endometrium undergoes regular cyclical changes so as to offer a suitable environment for implantation of a fertilised ovum (ie an easily penetrable, highly vascular structure with an abundant supply of glycogen for nutrition until maternal vascular connection is made).
