Phycologia britannica, or, A History of British sea-weeds, containing coloured figures, generic and specific characters, synonymes, and descriptions of all the species of algae inhabiting the shores of the British Islands . straight, with distant striae. The colour is a dull blackish green, without gloss when dry. A minute but curious Alga, allied in many points to Oseilla-toria, from which genus Microcoleus chiefly differs in possessingfrond-like sheaths, containing threads bundled together. Atfirst these sheaths appear scarcely more compound than a singlefilament, but as the plant advances, the sheath widens and isfound full of a multitude of filaments. These oscillate, likethose of an Oscillatoria, either from the wide mouth of thesheath, or from any accidental rupture which may happen inits side. I am indebted to Mr. Ralfs for the only specimens I have seenof this plant, and am not aware of any habitat for it, save theone above recorded. It ought to occur in similar places, on other parts of the coast, but unless closely looked after mayeasily escape detection. Fig. 1. Portion of the stratum:—natural size. 2. Sheaths, or fronds. 3. Apexof a sheath, with protruding filaments:—both magnified. pi cv.
