White is a direct descendant ofthe Puritan Elder John White, who sailed from London,England, about June 22, 1632, in the ship Lyon, CaptainPierce, and arrived at Boston, Massachusetts, September16 following. He was one of the first settlers of Cam-bridge, Massachusetts. ( olonel Amos H. White, the subject of this sketch, wasborn June 27, 1835, in Montgomery County, New the death of his father, his mother moved to NewYork City. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was anaccountant for an importing house. I Ie helped to raise Company D, Fifth New York Volun-teer Cavalry, and was mustered hist lieutenant of thiscompany September 21, 1861, and captain December 9following. In March, [862, he was with his regiment in the Shen-andoah Valley, and participated in that campaign underGeneral Hanks.
