The INJ^orthern women were ordered onboard a boat that was to drop down the on the way to the landing the shot andshell w^ere flying all around us, and I saw one ofour boys lying dead, having been fearfully of our soldiers w as condemned for desertion,and I saw him shot in the presence of the whole com-mand. The men were formed in a hollow square, sothat all could see very plainly. He stood in thecenter with the nine men, Avho aimed their guns athis breast, and eight bullets pierced his body withina circle of six inches, ^ine more guns were inreserve; bat ah! they Avere not needed.
