MODEL RELEASED. Depression. Man in a forlorn, depressed mood, lies on a bed. Beside him are pills and a glass of water, and he may be contemplating suicide by a drug overdose. Most people experience the symptoms of mild depression, such as excessive sadness or despair, at some point in life. The condition is not classed as a serious psychiatric illness, however, unless the patient's behaviour or physical state is affected causing loss of sleep or appetite, for example, or self-injury. Treatment for severe depression may include psychotherapy and anti- depressant drugs.
