The Robert E. Lee statue in Emancipation Park (formerly Lee Park) in Charlottesville, VA. In February 2017 the Charlottesville City Council voted to remove the statue and rename the park. After counter-protestor Heather Heyer was killed by a white supremacist during the August 12, 2017 "Unite the Right" rally, the council voted unanimously to shroud the statue in black. This picture was taken on September 9, 2017. On February 27, 2018 a judge ordered the tarps removed. On April 25. 2019, the same judge, Richard E. Moore ruled that the statues cannot be removed because they are war memorials protected by state law.
