I think the reason that many have failed withthese cauterizations is that they use an electrodewith too small a wire. If a platinum wire No. 22^or smaller is used, it has to be heated to a white heator it will not burn through to the bone. In the firstcase, it will cause a good deal of bleeding and willnot make a broad enough eschar; in the second place,only the superficial portions of the turbinated bodyare cauterized and only slight good will be accom-plished. One should use an electrode made with aNo. 20 platinum wire which should be heated to acherry red heat, and should leave an eschar, whenthrough, not less than one-twelfth of an inch inwidth.
