Contact lens fitting. Close-up of a woman holding a contact lens on her fingertip while fitting it onto her eye. Contact lenses are worn directly on the eye to correct imperfect vision. They work by replacing the shape of the surface of the cornea (front part of the eye) with their own shape, which is designed to compensate for the defect of vision in the eye. They can either be soft (comfortable, but wear out quickly) or hard (longer lasting, but less comfortable). They have to be stored and rinsed in special cleaning solutions to prevent them from carrying infections onto the surface of the eye.
