The same month he was made a mem-ber of the board of treasury, and in 1777 was placedupon the committee on marine, and also elected to theNew York legislature, with additional power to framethe constitution of the state. Under this constitu-tion he was elected senator for the southern districtof New York, and also returned to congress, which,in the most gloomy and trying period of the revolu-tion, had adjourned to New York from presence in that body was requested by the stategovernment, although the condition of his healthwas such as to render such attendance the last act ofpatriotism. About the same time he sold a portionof his property to sustain the public credit.
