Arnold Henry Guyot (1807-1884), Swiss-American geologist and meteorologist. In 1838 Guyot studied glaciers in the French Alps. He was the first to notice that they moved faster in the centre than at the edges, and at the top than at the bottom. In 1948 he emigrated to America, where he introduced the teaching of scientific geography, and, in 1854, became professor of geology at Princeton University. Guyot's extensive meteorological observations also led to the establishment of the United States Weather Bureau.
