Hysterectomy. View of a surgeon's hand holding a woman's uterus and ovaries after a hysterectomy operation. The uterus (womb) is connected to the ovaries by the fallopian tubes. The cervix, which opens into the vagina in the body, is next to the surgeon's thumb. Hysterectomy, the removal of a woman's uterus, is a common operation, and is the usual treatment for cervical and uterine cancer. Hysterectomy causes sterility, but patients should be able to lead an otherwise normal life. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used to compensate for the lack of hormones from the ovaries.
