1968 poster on an advertising hoarding or billboard in Ireland asking for donations for the Biafra Famine Appeal. Biafra, an oil rich region in the eastern part of Nigeria, began moves towards self-rule after Nigeria's independence from British rule. By the late 1960s the region was engulfed in a civil war and civilian casualties mounted and food ran out. Aid to combat the famine was organised throughout the west and food and medicine was airlifted into Biafra via a vast joint international humanitarian relief effort. It was the largest civilian airlift, and after the Berlin airlift of 1948-49 the largest non-combatant airlift ever carried out. This sustained effort saved more than a million lives.
