Lieutenant Doane has kindly allowed me to copythe special order detailing him for this service. It is as fol-lows: Headquarters Fort Ellis, Montana Territory, August 21, 1870. In accordance with instructions from Headquarters Dis-trict of Montana, Lieutenant G. 0. Doane, Second Cavalry,will proceed with one sergeant and four privates of Com-pany F. Second Cavalry, to escort the Surveyor General of. Washburn Yellowstone Expedition of 1870. 5 Montana to the falls and lakes of the Yellowstone, andreturn. They will be supplied with thirty days rations,and one hundred rounds of ammunition per man. Theacting assistant quarter-master will furnish them with thenecessary transportation. By order of Major Baker. J. G. MacADAMS,First Lieutenant Second Cavalry. Acting Post Adjutant. The names of the soldiers are Sergeant William Baker andPrivates John Williamson, George W. McConnell, WilliamLeipler and Charles Moore. This number, added to our owncompany of nine, will give us fourteen men for guard duty,a sufficient number to maintain a guard of two at all times,with two reliefs each night, each man serving half of a nighttwice each week. Our entire number, including the packersand cooks, is nineteen (19). Along the trail, after leaving Fort Ellis, we found largequantities of the service berry, called
