General anaesthesia drug infusion. Anaesthesiologist administering fentanyl for pain relief as part of the induction of general anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is where a patient is rendered unconscious to allow major surgery to be performed. A variety of drugs and anaesthetic agents are used. Fentanyl is a potent, synthetic opioid analgesic, commonly injected intravenously and used with the hypnotic drug propofol (see image C029/9026).
