Chiesa di Sant’Apollinare, Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: lion and dragon sculpted on plinth below columns to left of main (west) portal. The Chiesa di Sant’Apollinare (Church of St Apollinaris) was founded founded in the 1100s on the north-west bank of the River Adige at Trento. It was originally built in the Romanesque style, then rebuilt in Gothic-Cistercian style in the early 1300s. The church is dedicated to Bishop Apollinaris who was consecrated at Rome by the Apostle Peter and sent to Ravenna where he died as a martyr under the Emperor Vespasian circa AD 79.
