Yet, so oppressive has been the long ruleof the Ottoman government, and so protracted thedevastating wars, that the people have graduallyrelapsed into semi-barbarism, and the country hasbecome so depopulated, that the pelican of thewilderness every where finds an undisturbed ha-bitation, and the eagles are so numerous as tohave been our companions during the whole ofour voyage down the Danube, from Pest to theBlack Sea.
