Graham Greene, , Ministry of Munitions, The Council of the Navy Records Society wish itto be distinctly understood that they are not answerablefor any opinions or observations that may appear in theSocietys publications. For these the responsibility restsentirely with the Editors of the several PREFACE The manuscript in which Phineas Pett hasrecorded the story of his hfe from his birth in1570 to the end of September 1638, consistedoriginally of sixty-nine uniform quarto sheets,of which the 52nd is now lost, together with thebottom of the 14th. The handwriting is thatof Phineas throughout, but marginal referenceson the first few pages and a note at the end— The life of Commissioner Petts father whoseplace he did enjoy—have been added subse-quently by Samuel Pepys, no doubt when hewas making the transcript referred to below. The first paragraph is written on a separatesheet, which, unlike the rest, has no writingon the back, and is followed by a series of sub- 1612traction sums of the form 1570 giving the age ~42of Phineas for each year from 1612 to the differences apparent in the figuresand ink it is clear that these calculations weremade year by year from the time that Phineaswas forty-two until he reached the age of seventy
