Fiq. 2.—Jack-Pine Seed Bed, Kansas Sandhills. Plat at left treated with one-fourth ounce and plat at center with three-eighths ounce of sulphuric acid per square foot. Plat at right untreated. Note the relative freedom from weeds in the treated plats. The apparently thin stand of trees in the treated plats is due to the very small size of the young seedlings of this species of pine. Actual counts in these plats showed the stand to be as dense as can be grown without subsequent overcrowding. Photographed by Stephen C. Bruner (F 4)..
