Thewhole foreground, an area of cultivated land, broken here and there by spots of verdure and cutby a narrow stream running between grassybanks, is in shadow full of reflected light. Thefigures of two girls washing clothes in the streamgive life to the scene and add to the impression ofprimitive simplicity of intention which is thekeynote of the picture. The flash of sunlight onthe distant houses and on the spring blossomswarrants the sentiment which the title suggests. Signed at the right, J. Bastien-Lepage, Damvtllers, 1883.
