A green heron fluffs its feathers after preening at Gaillard Lake in the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, June 17, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The bird sanctuary, established in 1961, features 164 acres of woodland trails that meander through pines, magnolia trees, marshes, dunes, swamps, and beaches. Dauphin Island is classified as a “Globally Important Bird Area” or Global IBA by the American Bird Conservancy and is often the first land stop for migratory birds. The trail system became a National Recreation Trail in 2012. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
