Midsummer celebrations at Rattvik in Dalarna Sweden


All over Sweden, people celebrate Midsummer Eve, which comes on the weekend nearest June 24, with Midsummer Day on Saturday. Many folk traditions are associated with this festive event, the climax of the year, when the sun is at its highest point. Maypoles are raised in city parks, village greens, and private gardens. Midsummer is the esseence of celebration in Sweden, bringing out the best of both land and people. Children gather flowers and smiles from the fields, ladies weave garlands of leaves for the maypole and house, and flower wreaths for the head. Food, drink, folk music, dancing, and traditional costumes all blend together with the energy of the summer sun in delightful culmination.
