Heroin opioid drug, molecular structure. Heroin is a synthetic derivative of morphine. It is a strong euphoric, used worldwide as a social and recreational drug. Heroin is particularly dangerous because tolerance to its potent psychoactive effects develops quickly, requiring ever-larger doses to achieve the same effect. Addiction can occur very quickly. Consequently, approved medical applications of heroin do not exist in the USA and are minimal elsewhere in the world.
