Jules Fontan (1849-1931), French naval surgeon. Fontan was born and died in Toulon, France. Fontan achieved several firsts in surgery, including the first successful surgery on a wound of the left ventricle of the heart. He was Senior Medical Officer of the Navy, and Director of the Health Department of the Navy in Toulon. He was a Member of the Academie du Var, a learned society founded in Toulon in 1800. His publications include 'Les Marins provencaux dans la Guerre d'independance des Etats-Unis d'Amerique' (1918). This carte de visite photograph was taken between 1892 and 1920 in Toulon by the B.
